Way Off Broadway Productions began in 1997. After having written the musical play entitled "Royal Affair" to be produced by Little Theatre of Oak Run, Dick Boden realized that while the play was a huge success, the difficulties of asking a non-musical performing group to present a musical production were too complicated. While many of the actors were talented enough to perform both song and dance, it wasn't what the group was used to doing. Along with Kay and Len Teitler, Dick felt they should form a complimentary theater group that would perform musicals outside of the Little Theatre umbrella. By Laws for the new group were drawn up, membership forms were handed out, and over 50 resumes were received in the initial response to form Way Off Broadway Productions. The first slate of officers were Kaye Teitler - President, Joan Asmuth - Vice President, Stella Andrews - Secretary, Marti Rhodes - Treasurer. Both Little Theatre and Way Off Broadway met with the Oak Run Homeowners Association representative, Bette Crouse, and together it was decided that Little Theatre would put on a play in the spring, and Way Off Broadway would put on a musical in the fall. The first play under the auspices of Way Off Broadway was "Ship or Get Off The Yacht" written by Dick Boden. The Producer was Kaye Teitler, it was jointly directed by Dick Boden and Kay Teitler, and the musical director was Donna Topp. When "Ship or Get Off The Yacht" was produced, Way Off Broadway had no functioning treasury, so 19 'Angels' contributed $100 each to provide seed money for the production. After the ticket sales for the play, the 'Angels' were reimbursed for their initial outlay, and Way Off Broadway was now a self-sustaining entity.
